Our sculpture journey continues

Step 5. It seems that clay we used for the sculpture contained a higher percent of kaolin than expected and the result, after the kiln, was more on the porcelain side. This unexpected turn resulted in vitreous look, heavier weight, higher breakability and … the need to find a solution to frame our work in safe conditions.
There is where Leyla’s creative ideas came again into the … picture, should we say sculpture. Leyla’s solution was to encapsulate the work into a base, which will act as holding frame while still preserving the character and quality of a piece of art. Accordingly, we cut out pieces of styrofoam, carved the contours of our sculpture, fit the sculpture inside the carved contour, covered the base with plaster of Paris while fitting the sculpture snugly in its base.
Lots of mess while carving the styrofoam!!! Styrofoam flying everywhere and sticking too anything!! More of a mess when covering the base with plaster!!! All fun!!
At this point, sculptures are framed securely in their base, ready for the next step.
Next step … we still did not figure out yet, another creative challenge on the way.
